Should You Upgrade POSitouch to Shift4 Dine?

POSitouch is a Legacy Platform: Here's What That Means for Shift4 Merchants

If your restaurant still uses POSitouch, you’ve likely been pitched an upgrade to an alternative solution by now. Or maybe you’ve noticed that POS feels a bit outdated.

Whatever brought you here, I want to be clear:

  • POSitouch still works
  • Shift4 still supports it
  • You’re not required to move or upgrade
  • There’s no official end of life announcement or date it will be eliminated (for now)

That said, it’s still worth weighing your options. Shift4 has newer POS solutions for restaurants, bars, cafes, quick-service food, and basically any business in the hospitality space.

I’m not promoting or pitching any of them (that’s not what we do here at MCC). The most important thing for you to understand here is that if you decide to change your POS, you keep Shift4 as your processor. Just don’t let the change give them a reason to increase your processing rates.

Otherwise, stay put and continue using POSitouch for as long as Shift4 lets you.

POSitouch is Still Supported, But Shift Has Stopped Selling It

Shift4 acquired POSitouch back in 2018. And some of you reading this may remember that time well. As shortly after the acquisition, Shift4 attached its own processing to the POS ensuring that you couldn’t use the platform without having payments routed through Shift4.

The POS has served its purpose for Shift4 well over the years. It was a way for them to deepen their positioning in the hospitality space and ramp up processing volume without having to build a new system from scratch.

And it’s the same playbook they used for other POS they acquired around that same time (like Future POS and Restaurant Manager).

But Shift4’s priorities changed when they launched SkyTab POS in 2022.

They built this in-house and began promoting it aggressively to both new and existing clients. This became Shift4’s flagship POS for hospitality, and moved systems like POSitouch into legacy territory.

That’s pretty much where POSitouch still sits today.

Shift4 still supports it, and it’s tagged as a legacy system in its knowledge base. But they aren’t selling it anywhere on their website. Sales reps aren’t offering it to new customers. They aren’t making any improvements, and they’re uninterested in solving any custom problems for you.

Should You Upgrade to Shift4 Dine?

SkyTab POS officially rebranded to Shift4 Dine in 2026.

As a result, reps have become even more aggressive in trying to get legacy customers to upgrade. This makes POSitouch even further removed from where it stood a year ago.

We’ve seen this before from Shift4. Harbortouch became SkyTab. And now SkyTab has turned into Shift4 Dine.

Whether or not you should upgrade depends on if you can actually benefit from a new system. It makes sense if:

  • POSitouch is glitchy or giving your problems
  • You can’t integrate your POS with other business tools
  • You’re using dated hardware with PCI compliance risk exposure
  • Shift4 is charging you extra fees for continuing to use its legacy system
  • Support from your third-party provider has dropped

All of these are reasonable instances where you could consider the move to Shift4 Dine. Particularly because you can keep the same processor.

Just don’t get sold on Shift4 Dine as some groundbreaking new product. It’s definitely an upgrade from legacy systems like POSitouch. But it’s just a logo change and rebrand from SkyTab.

What Changes if You Move From POSitouch to Shift4 Dine

Migrating from POSitouch to Shift4 Dine likely requires a new POS agreement and potentially a new or amended merchant services agreement.

So while Shift4 remains your processor, you might be dealing with:

  • New hardware
  • Recurring per-terminal charges
  • Fresh term commitments (typically 36 months)
  • Monthly POS subscription fees
  • Monthly billing fees
  • Annual fees

This can all be negotiated, and it also depends on whether you’re going through Shift4 or a third-party reseller.

The core setup on the backend remains the same in the sense that your POS leverages Shift4 for payment processing (and that’s your only option). But your processing costs should either stay the same or go down. This is not an excuse for Shift4 to charge you more, even though they’ll try.

How the Migration from POSitouch Can Be Your Best Negotiating Moment With Shift4

Here’s the part that nobody is telling you during these upgrade pitches. Shift4 wants you off of your legacy platform.

Consolidating its customer base to one supported product is worth real money to them. They don’t want to be dealing with POSitouch anymore, and frankly, if they could snap their fingers and have everyone move to Shift4 Dine tomorrow, I’m sure they’d do it.

And while they haven’t signaled or hinted at a forced migration. There’s always the chance that comes down the road (like we saw with Harbortouch and SkyTab).

So you can actually use this as an opportunity to negotiate with Shift4. You’re essentially doing them a favor by switching.

They keep your business. And you get an upgrade.

The key here is not accepting their first offer. Use this as an opportunity to get favorable terms on your new Shift4 Dine account.

What to Negotiate Before You Sign Anything

Your leverage is highest right now, before you officially commit to switching from POSitouch to Shift4 Dine.

Here’s what you can focus on:

  • Waived setup or migration fees
  • Discounted hardware
  • Waived or reduced software fees (at least early on)
  • A better discount rate (Shift4’s processing markup per transaction)
  • Interchange-plus pricing if you’re on a tiered, flat-rate, or simple change pricing
  • Not paying an early termination fee on your existing agreement
  • Waived fees for equipment returns or de-installation charges
  • Flexible term length

Moving from POSitouch to Shift4 Dine should not be an expensive move for your business.

It should be a seamless transition and as close to fee-free if possible. You’re keeping the same processor and Shift4 will continue making plenty of money on your account on the processing side.

If anything, it’s an excuse for you to take a closer look at your costs and negotiate cheaper rates.

Can You Continue Using POSitouch?

Yes, as of right now, you’re not forced to upgrade or switch POS systems.

You can continue using POSitouch until it reaches its end of life. And while there hasn’t been any sunset date announced yet, I think the writing is on the wall that it will happen within the next few years.

But for now, you can keep using it if:

  • Your effective rate is still low
  • Processing costs aren’t increasing
  • Shift4 isn’t adding extra fees to penalize you for using POSitouch
  • You’re not relying on other third-party integrations
  • You don’t need all the extra bells and whistles available from Shift4 Dine

POSitouch is basically in “If it’s not broken, don’t fix it” territory for certain businesses.

Say you run a small single-location coffee shop that just has one POS terminal and you’ve been using POSitouch for years. Rates haven’t gone up, your hardware is fine, and your operation is simple enough that it doesn’t require fancy integrations or updated inventory tracking. You can ride it out until the wheels fall off.

Should You Buy POSitouch as a New Customer?

Absolutely not.

POSitouch isn’t even available directly through Shift4 anymore. So if an ISO or reseller is offering this to you, it’s a red flag.

You can technically still get it through a third-party vendor. But I can’t see any legitimate reason they’d have to sell you such outdated or legacy software.

Final Thoughts

For restaurants on POSitouch, you have two reasonable paths to consider right now:

  • Migrate to Shift4 Dine or
  • Stick with POSitouch as long as you can

The “best” answer depends on your unique situation. If POSitouch no longer serves your needs well or if you’re paying too much, you can treat the upgrade as a negotiation opportunity to improve your POS while cutting costs at the same time. Whereas another business might be perfectly fine staying on POSitouch for the foreseeable future.

Either way, there’s no reason to change processors.

Shift4 will continue processing your payments behind the scenes whether you’re using POSitouch or Shift4 Dine (formerly SkyTab), even if you’re going through a third-party vendor.

The most important part of this is understanding that the POS itself should only be a fraction of your processing costs. Real money is saved or lost on the processing fees. Whether that’s your per-transaction markup, pricing structure, or extra fees, simple negotiations can save you thousands every single month.

Most businesses just don’t know what to look for here. And that’s where we can help.
